Recapping the Doctor Who Screening

A sell-out crowd gathered at Riverside Studios in London on Saturday, 4th April 2026, for a special screening of the two episodes of ‘The Daleks’ Master Plan’, which had been recovered by Film is Fabulous!

The packed programme featured the first three instalments of the serial. Written by Terry Nation, each dark and gritty episode was immediately followed by a discussion. Peter Purves appeared on one of the panels and charmed the audience with recollections of his time with The Doctor. He remarked: ‘Today has been one of those magnificent days. I’ve loved every minute of it and it’s so rewarding to be able to watch these in the company of so many people who haven’t seen them either for 60 years.’

Peter, now 87, played companion Steven Taylor to William Hartnell’s First Doctor. However, like so much of 1960s Doctor Who, many of his episodes were destroyed due to the BBC’s poor internal communication.

The event was hosted by Toby Hadoke, who excelled in the role. He ushered the panellists through a series of questions relating to Doctor Who, and the episodes screened during the joyous occasion.

Sue Malden, formerly the BBC’s first archive selector, now a trustee of Film is Fabulous, appeared. She made it clear that the team are not treasure hunters and have no special interest in Doctor Who. Their remit is to preserve film culture, and vulnerable private film collections.

Toby thanked the deceased collector, in whose collection the missing episodes were found, as well as Film is Fabulous, and noted to rapturous applause: ‘My little observation of this, as I was adjacent to things going on, is that one of the reasons that this was so damn successful was because the inner workings of the BBC, and the outer workings of fandom, had absolutely nothing to do with it.’

The other panellists comprised: Nicholas Briggs, the voice of the Daleks in modern Doctor Who, Tim Burrows, host of the Doctor Who Missing Episodes Podcast, Gavin Rymill, Doctor Who writer, researcher, 3D illustrator and YouTuber, and Paul Vanezis, an independent producer and director with a long association with Doctor Who.

Many of those who worked on The Daleks’ Master Plan have, sadly, since passed away. But they were not forgotten at the screening. The First Doctor, William Hartnell, companion Adrienne Hill, director Douglas Camfield and writer Dennis Spooner were all represented by their families at the event. Their involvement was greeted with great enthusiasm.

Film is Fabulous! is a charitable trust run by film collectors, cinema lovers, and vintage television enthusiasts. Its primary objective is to ensure that vulnerable film collections held in the U.K. are preserved when private film collectors, and former industry professionals, pass away. Since 2023, the team have preserved many private film collections.
